Chelsea's Manager Maresca Describes Lead-Up Period as The 'Toughest 48 Hours' at the Blues

Chelsea tactician Enzo Maresca remarked that the build-up to Saturday's victory against Everton constituted "the most challenging 48 hours" since his arrival with the London club.

The Italian delivered a somewhat cryptic comment in his after-game media briefing despite earning a 2-0 win at Stamford Bridge through goals from Cole Palmer and Malo Gusto.

Those points propelled Chelsea once again into the Premier League's top four, perhaps lightening the atmosphere after a loss to Atalanta in the Champions League that had extended the side's winless run to four outings.

However, when questioned about the full-back's assist and general display, Maresca unexpectedly shared his displeasure over the previous two days at the club.

"The way the players are eager to improve has been superb and this is the explanation why I praise them - because with numerous challenges, they are performing admirably after a tricky week," he commented.

"From the moment I arrived at the club, the last 48 hours have been the toughest because a lot of people failed to back us."

Pressed on what he meant, the ex- Leicester City manager elaborated: "Most difficult 48 hours since I came to the club because people failed to back me and the team."

When questioned if he meant people within at Chelsea, he answered: "Broadly speaking. In general," before specifying when asked if it was directed towards fans or the press: "I love the fans and we are very pleased with the fans."

Fitness & Disciplinary Crisis

Maresca also highlighted Chelsea's ongoing injury and disciplinary issues, noting they had been missing key forward Cole Palmer for much of the campaign, in addition to being deprived of linchpin Moises Caicedo to a three-game ban and striker Liam Delap to two serious injuries.

"I really commend the players and the squad because we have played 16 Premier League games, five of them minus Moises Caicedo, 11 of them minus Cole Palmer, nearly every one of them minus Liam Delap," he explained.

"And this squad, no matter who is on the pitch, they are doing brilliantly. Today was five games in 12 days so undoubtedly when you see Cole Palmer playing, we said many times that he's our top player but we play almost all season without our best player.

"We play five games in the Premier League without Moises Caicedo. This is the explanation why I'm so pleased for the players and it's something that I would want people externally to appreciate because the effort from the players is remarkable."

Chelsea's triumph over Everton cemented their standing in 4th place in the Premier League table, with a Carabao Cup last-eight clash at Cardiff and a league journey to Newcastle to come in the coming days.

Speculation Regarding Maresca's Comments

It was ambiguous what exactly prompted Maresca to describe the previous 48 hours as the worst of his tenure as Chelsea manager.

In that timeframe, the coach had returned with his staff and players from his native Italy, conducted a session at the training ground, faced a pre-game press briefing where he seemed at ease, and engineered a win over an high-flying Everton team.

It was not obvious whether any specific press stories had unsettled him, if online discourse were a factor, or if it was something more significant from inside the hierarchy at Stamford Bridge.

Maresca specifically took care to rule out that it was an issue involving the club's fans, some of whom have still have yet to fully embrace him since his appointment from Leicester in July 2024.
